Geico is the cheapest large car insurer for most Colorado drivers. It averages $196 a month for full coverage and $66 a month for liability-only coverage, according to ValuePenguin’s October 2026 analysis. NerdWallet’s October 2026 data points to a smaller insurer, American National, at a median of $1,327 a year ($111 a month) for full coverage. Colorado is an expensive state for car insurance, so comparing several quotes is worth the time.

Cheapest car insurance companies in Colorado
ValuePenguin analyzed 405,376 quotes from seven large Colorado insurers across 543 ZIP codes. Its sample driver is a 30-year-old man with good credit and no prior claims who drives a 2018 Honda Civic EX. “Full coverage” means 50/100/50 liability, 50/100 uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and collision and comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible. We calculated annual figures by multiplying the monthly averages by 12.

Geico’s full coverage average is 28% below the state average. American Family and State Farm cost about $40 a month more than Geico, but ValuePenguin rates both higher for customer service, so they’re worth quoting if service matters to you.
A second opinion: NerdWallet’s Colorado rankings
NerdWallet’s analysis uses a 35-year-old driver with good credit and a 2023 Toyota Camry LE, averaging rates for single men and women. Its full coverage policy has higher limits than ValuePenguin’s: 100/300/50 liability, 100/300 uninsured motorist coverage and $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles. It also includes smaller regional insurers, which is why its cheapest names differ.

Best car insurance in Colorado for customer service
The cheapest policy isn’t always the best one if your claim goes badly. ValuePenguin picks State Farm as the best overall choice for most Colorado drivers because it pairs affordable rates ($236/month for full coverage, 13% below the state average) with above-average scores in J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction and claims satisfaction studies. State Farm also gets about 41% fewer complaints than expected for a company its size, according to NAIC data cited by ValuePenguin.

Aurora, a Denver suburb, is the most expensive city in ValuePenguin’s data. ValuePenguin suggests higher property crime may be one reason. Clifton, a small town near Grand Junction, was the cheapest at $200/month. The Western Slope and northern Front Range cities such as Fort Collins and Loveland are generally cheaper than the Denver metro and Colorado Springs.
NerdWallet’s minimum coverage averages follow the same pattern: about $881 a year in both Denver and Aurora and $864 a year in Colorado Springs.
Colorado car insurance requirements
Colorado requires liability insurance with at least these limits (25/50/15):
- Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
- Property damage liability: $15,000 per accident.
A minimum coverage policy pays only for injuries and damage you cause to others in a crash. Optional coverages include uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical payments, collision and comprehensive. ValuePenguin recommends full coverage for most drivers, and especially if your car is financed or leased, worth more than $5,000, or less than 8 years old.
Uninsured motorist coverage deserves a close look in Colorado. The Insurance Research Council estimated that 19.7% of Colorado drivers were uninsured in 2023, the ninth-highest rate in the country, according to Triple-I.

Penalties for driving uninsured in Colorado
Driving without insurance is a misdemeanor in Colorado. According to ValuePenguin, a first offense can bring a fine of at least $500, a license suspension until you get insurance, possible jail time, up to 4 points on your license and up to 40 hours of community service. To get your license back, you’ll pay a $95 reinstatement fee and need an SR-22 certificate for three years. Second and later offenses carry fines of at least $1,000 and suspension of your license, registration and plates for four to eight months.
Why car insurance is expensive in Colorado
ValuePenguin ranks Colorado the 19th-most expensive state for full coverage and points to three main causes: severe weather that damages cars (including hail), high auto theft rates, and a fast-growing population that puts more drivers on the road.
The good news is that 2026 rate filings are mostly flat or down. Using Colorado Division of Insurance filing data (via S&P Global RateWatch, as of Oct. 6, 2026), ValuePenguin reports these 2026 changes at major insurers:
| Company | 2026 rate change | 5-year rate change |
|---|---|---|
| State Farm | -7.8% | +37.6% |
| American Family | -6.0% | +39.2% |
| Travelers | -3.0% | +30.3% |
| USAA | -1.6% | +34.5% |
| Allstate | -1.1% | +53.0% |
| Liberty Mutual | -0.3% | +59.1% |
| Geico | -0.2% | +25.9% |
| Progressive | 0.0% | +5.3% |
| Sentry | +1.0% | +57.8% |
| Farmers | +3.4% | +43.7% |
Source: ValuePenguin. A filing may apply only to some drivers, vehicles or regions, so not every policyholder sees the same change.
Even with these cuts, most large insurers’ Colorado rates are still 25% to 60% higher than five years ago. If your renewal went up, shopping around is the fastest fix.
How to lower your car insurance in Colorado
- Compare at least three quotes, including a regional insurer. National brands (Geico, State Farm, American Family) and regional ones (American National, Grange, Colorado Farm Bureau) can differ by hundreds of dollars a year for the same driver.
- Quote identical coverage. Use the same liability limits, uninsured motorist coverage and deductibles at every company.
- Bundle home or renters insurance. ValuePenguin notes bundling can bring big savings, and State Farm also has some of the cheapest home insurance in Colorado.
- Try a safe-driving program. Many insurers offer usage-based discounts through a phone app or plug-in device.
- Drop coverage you don’t need. On an older, paid-off car, dropping collision and comprehensive can cut your bill, as long as you could afford to replace the car yourself.
- Time your switch after a ticket or accident. Your rate usually won’t rise until renewal, so start comparing a few weeks before your policy expires, according to ValuePenguin.
If you can’t get coverage in the regular market because of crashes or other factors, NerdWallet notes you can apply through the Colorado Automobile Insurance Plan.
Our methodology
We didn’t collect our own quotes. We compared two independent 2026 rate studies that each use Quadrant Information Services data drawn from insurer rate filings: ValuePenguin (updated Oct. 13, 2026) and NerdWallet (updated Oct. 2, 2026). Because the studies use different drivers, cars and coverage limits, we report them separately instead of averaging them. Uninsured driver data comes from Triple-I and the Insurance Research Council. Annual figures marked “est.” are ValuePenguin’s monthly averages multiplied by 12. Your quotes will differ. This article is general information, not insurance or legal advice.
