By Roberto Gomes | Updated October 2026. This guide compares published 2026 rate data from NerdWallet, ValuePenguin and Insurify with official information from the Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, the Georgia Code, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Prime Capital Report does not sell insurance and is not a licensed agent. Every price below is an average or median from the source named next to it, so your own quote will be different.
The best car insurance in Atlanta is a policy with solid coverage at a fair price, from a company that handles claims well. In 2026, regional insurers lead on price: Georgia Farm Bureau, Donegal and Auto-Owners are the cheapest names in the studies we reviewed, with State Farm, Country Financial and Central Insurance close behind. Atlanta drivers pay well above the Georgia average, and Georgia itself is more expensive than most states. Heavy interstate traffic and vehicle theft concentrated in the core metro counties are the main reasons. Because the gap between the cheapest and most expensive companies is so wide, comparing quotes can save Atlanta drivers well over $1,000 a year.
Key takeaways
- Atlanta costs more than the rest of Georgia: NerdWallet’s October 2026 median for full coverage is $3,933 a year in Atlanta, compared with $3,160 for Georgia and $2,361 nationally.
- Lowest prices in the studies: Donegal ($1,716 a year) and Georgia Farm Bureau ($1,915) had the lowest medians in NerdWallet’s Atlanta data. Insurify found Auto-Owners cheapest at $182 a month for full coverage.
- Best service: ValuePenguin rates USAA highest in Georgia for military families; among companies open to everyone, State Farm and Farm Bureau score well.
- Legal minimum: 25/50/25 liability, according to the Georgia insurance commissioner’s office. Uninsured motorist coverage is included unless you reject it in writing.
- Theft is falling fast: Metro Atlanta thefts dropped from about 16,200 in 2024 to roughly 11,600 in 2025, according to NICB data reported by CBS Atlanta.
- Uninsured drivers: an estimated 19.0% of Georgia drivers were uninsured in 2023, according to the Insurance Research Council.
How much does car insurance cost in Atlanta?
Each source uses different drivers, cars and coverage levels, so their averages don’t match. That’s why we show them side by side instead of blending them. The pattern is consistent, though: Atlanta costs about 20% to 40% more than the Georgia average.

In NerdWallet’s data, the typical Atlanta driver pays about 24% more than the typical Georgia driver ($3,933 vs. $3,160) and two-thirds more than the national median. ValuePenguin’s Atlanta average of $254 a month is 38% above its statewide $184. It notes that Georgia’s minimum-liability rates are 16% above the national average, partly because Georgia has more car accidents than many states. The most expensive place in Georgia in ValuePenguin’s study is Pine Lake, a small city in metro Atlanta, at $318 a month.
Prices also vary a lot across the metro. In ValuePenguin’s city table, Sandy Springs ($216), Dunwoody ($222) and Smyrna ($228) are cheaper than Atlanta, while East Point ($294) costs more. Insurify’s quote data shows the same split: Alpharetta ($196) and Roswell ($217) are well below Atlanta’s $270, while Decatur ($313), Clarkston ($318) and Lithonia ($320) are above it.

Insurify: average Atlanta quotes by company
Insurify’s figures blend real-time quotes from its users with Quadrant Information Services data, so they reflect a mix of real drivers rather than one sample profile. In its Atlanta data, Auto-Owners had the lowest average quotes for both full coverage and state-minimum liability.
| Company | Full coverage (avg. per month) | Minimum liability (avg. per month) |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-Owners | $182 | $101 |
| State Farm | $195 | $109 |

ValuePenguin’s Georgia study adds a third view. With a 30-year-old driver and a 2018 Honda Civic, it finds Farm Bureau cheapest in Atlanta at $161 a month, and cheapest in about three-quarters of Georgia cities. Statewide, its full coverage ranking is Farm Bureau ($134), Progressive ($153), Auto-Owners ($190) and GEICO ($195), with USAA at $148. The practical lesson: get quotes from Georgia Farm Bureau, Auto-Owners and State Farm, plus Donegal or Country Financial where they’re available to you.
Customer service and financial strength
Price is only half of “best.” ValuePenguin chose Georgia’s top companies using J.D. Power’s 2025 satisfaction and claims studies, NAIC complaint data and rates. Here are the scores it reports.
| Company | J.D. Power 2025 customer satisfaction score | AM Best financial strength |
|---|---|---|
| USAA* | 735 | A++ |

Best car insurance in Atlanta by driver profile
Young drivers
For 20-year-olds with their own policy, NerdWallet found Central Insurance ($3,348 a year) and Donegal ($3,382) cheapest, ahead of Georgia Farm Bureau ($4,600). Insurify says Atlanta teens pay the most of any age group, averaging $384 a month for liability coverage. Georgia’s Joshua’s Law also requires 16- and 17-year-olds to complete driver education and 40 hours of supervised driving, as Insurify notes. The Georgia commissioner’s office lists driver education courses among common discounts.
Drivers with a ticket
Insurify notes that in Georgia, driving 15 to 18 mph over the limit adds two points to your license, rising to six points at 34 mph or more over. In its Atlanta data, Auto-Owners had the lowest average quote for drivers with a speeding ticket ($131 a month), followed by State Farm ($138).
Drivers with an accident
After one at-fault accident, NerdWallet found Georgia Farm Bureau ($2,095 a year) and Donegal ($2,102) nearly tied for cheapest, with Central Insurance next at $3,344. In Insurify’s data, Auto-Owners ($137 a month) and State Farm ($148) had the lowest average quotes. Insurify says 5.4% of Atlanta drivers in its data have an at-fault accident on their record.
Drivers with a DUI
Donegal is the standout after a DUI in NerdWallet’s data, at $2,554 a year, followed by Georgia Farm Bureau ($3,721) and Progressive ($5,120). Statewide, ValuePenguin found Progressive cheapest after a DUI at $240 a month. Insurify notes that a first DUI in Georgia can bring up to a year in jail, a $300 to $1,000 fine, up to a year of license suspension and at least 40 hours of community service.
Mature drivers
NerdWallet’s cheapest medians for 60-year-olds in Atlanta were Donegal ($1,794 a year), Georgia Farm Bureau ($1,819) and Central Insurance ($2,135). Insurify says Atlanta seniors pay the lowest rates of any age group: $197 a month for liability and $284 for full coverage on average.
Car insurance costs by Atlanta ZIP code

Insurers price by location because crash and theft rates differ across the metro. NerdWallet published median full coverage rates for Atlanta’s most populated ZIP codes. The south and southwest side cost the most, and the northern ZIP codes the least.
| ZIP code | Area | Full coverage (median per year) | vs. city median ($3,933) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30350 | North Sandy Springs / Dunwoody area | $3,411 | −13% |
| 30328 | Sandy Springs | $3,593 | −9% |
| 30338 | Dunwoody | $3,600 | −8% |
| 30319 | Brookhaven | $3,622 | −8% |
| 30341 | Chamblee | $3,622 | −8% |
| 30331 | Southwest Atlanta | $4,074 | +4% |
| 30318 | West Midtown / northwest Atlanta | $4,140 | +5% |
| 30344 | East Point | $4,214 | +7% |
| 30315 | South Atlanta | $4,411 | +12% |
| 30349 | South Fulton / College Park area | $4,729 | +20% |

The gap between 30350 and 30349 is more than $1,300 a year for the same driver and car. If you’re moving within the metro, get a quote for the new address before you sign a lease.
Why car insurance is more expensive in Atlanta
Vehicle theft
Comprehensive coverage pays for theft, so local theft levels feed into your premium. Theft in Georgia has dropped sharply: NICB counted a 28% statewide decline in 2025, one of the 10 largest in the country. According to NICB data reported by CBS Atlanta, Georgia thefts fell from about 23,900 to 17,200, and metro Atlanta thefts fell from about 16,200 to roughly 11,600. Theft is still concentrated in the core: the top five Georgia counties for thefts in 2025 were all in metro Atlanta, led by DeKalb (3,544) and Fulton (3,295). The most stolen models in Georgia were the Hyundai Elantra (650), Hyundai Sonata (511) and Dodge Charger (392).
Traffic and crashes
Atlanta sits at the junction of I-75, I-85 and I-20, ringed by I-285. Insurify says Atlanta has the fifth-highest average commute time in the nation, just over 32 minutes. More time on congested interstates means more crash risk. Statewide, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reports 1,403 traffic deaths on Georgia roads in 2024.
Weather
Insurify points to Atlanta’s history of thunderstorms, flooding, winter storms and tornadoes as one reason rates are higher. It also says Georgia car insurance quotes rose 26% after Hurricane Helene in 2024, even though Atlanta itself was largely spared. The Georgia insurance commissioner’s office notes that comprehensive coverage, also called “other than collision,” is the part of a policy that pays for losses such as theft, vandalism and fire.
Uninsured drivers
The Insurance Research Council estimates that 19.0% of Georgia drivers were uninsured in 2023, the 11th-highest rate in the country and above the national 15.4%, according to the Insurance Information Institute. That’s nearly one in five drivers, which makes uninsured motorist coverage worth keeping.
Georgia car insurance requirements
The Georgia Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire says the minimum liability insurance required under Georgia law is:
- Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident.
- Property damage liability: $25,000 per incident.
Uninsured motorist coverage: Under Georgia Code § 33-7-11, an auto policy issued in Georgia must include uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury. The coverage applies unless a named insured rejects it in writing. Given that about one in five Georgia drivers may be uninsured, rejecting it is rarely a good idea.
Georgia doesn’t require physical damage coverage, the commissioner’s office notes, but lenders and leasing companies usually do. You can also file a claim under your own physical damage coverage even if someone else caused the crash. A $25,000 property damage limit won’t replace many newer vehicles, so most drivers with assets should consider at least 100/300/100 liability with matching uninsured motorist limits.
Georgia is an at-fault state
Georgia uses a tort (at-fault) system, so the driver who causes a crash, and their insurer, pays for the other side’s damages. Under Georgia Code § 51-12-33, damages are reduced by your share of fault. You can’t recover anything if you are 50% or more responsible for the injury or damage.
Are Atlanta car insurance rates going up in 2026?
For most drivers, no. ValuePenguin says several major Georgia insurers raised rates in 2026, but many more lowered them. Based on filings current as of Oct. 5, 2026, the biggest cuts came from Travelers (−9.8%), State Farm (−3.0%), Auto-Owners (−3.0%), Progressive (−2.9%), USAA (−2.6%) and Farm Bureau (−2.3%). American Family filed the largest increase (+14.3%), while GEICO (+0.2%), Allstate (+0.5%) and Farmers (+2.9%) edged up. Five-year increases remain steep: American Family is up 95.2% and Allstate 91.7%. These are average filed changes, so your own renewal can move differently.
Car insurance discounts in Georgia
The Georgia commissioner’s office lists these discounts to ask about:
- Multiple vehicles on one policy.
- Driver education courses and good student discounts.
- Safety devices and anti-theft devices.
- Low mileage.
- Good driver and renewal discounts.
- Auto and home package (bundling).
- Policyholder dividends, at companies that pay them.
How to save on car insurance in Atlanta
- Compare at least three quotes with identical coverage. ValuePenguin says the gap between Georgia’s most and least expensive full coverage is $151 a month, or more than $1,800 a year. Our guide on how to compare car insurance quotes walks through it.
- Include regional insurers. Georgia Farm Bureau, Donegal, Central and Country Financial all price well in Atlanta in the data above.
- Keep uninsured motorist coverage. It’s included unless you reject it in writing, and nearly one in five Georgia drivers may be uninsured.
- Use anti-theft tools. NICB recommends steering wheel locks, alarms, kill switches and GPS trackers, and the commissioner’s office lists anti-theft devices as a discount.
- Protect your record. Georgia’s point system can make a speeding ticket expensive.
- Raise deductibles instead of dropping comprehensive if your car would be hard to replace.
- Re-shop every year. With most large Georgia insurers cutting rates in 2026, your renewal is a good time to compare.
