This guide compares published 2026 rate studies from ValuePenguin and NerdWallet with official information from the Colorado Division of Insurance (DOI) and Insurance Research Council data published by the Insurance Information Institute. The best car insurance in Colorado for most drivers comes from GEICO, State Farm and American Family, plus USAA for military families. GEICO had the lowest full coverage average among the large insurers in ValuePenguin’s October 13, 2026 study, at $196 a month. ValuePenguin names State Farm ($236 a month) the best overall for its service. In NerdWallet’s October 2026 analysis, the smaller American National had the lowest medians of all: $111 a month for full coverage and $17 for minimum coverage. Colorado is pricier than most states. ValuePenguin puts full coverage at an average of $272 a month and blames hail, car theft and fast population growth. Colorado also has one of the highest shares of uninsured drivers in the country, so uninsured motorist coverage is worth keeping.

ValuePenguin blames Colorado’s high rates on extreme weather, high auto theft (citing FBI data) and a fast-growing population that puts more drivers on the road. The weather risk shows up in comprehensive coverage, the part of full coverage that pays for hail, theft, fire and falling objects (Colorado DOI). The studies use different sample drivers. ValuePenguin prices a 30-year-old man with a 2018 Honda Civic EX and 50/100/50 liability with $500 deductibles. NerdWallet prices a 35-year-old with a 2023 Toyota Camry LE, 100/300/50 liability and $1,000 deductibles.

Outside GEICO territory, American Family is cheapest in 21% of Colorado cities and State Farm in 2%, according to ValuePenguin.

After an accident, the gap between the cheapest and most expensive insurer is $426 a month. Poor credit adds $277 a month on average. Young drivers
| Company | 18-year-old, liability only (monthly) | 18-year-old, full coverage (monthly) |

| GEICO | $195 | $506 |
| American Family | $235 | $669 |

GEICO is cheapest for teens and after a ticket ($248 a month for liability). After an accident, State Farm is cheapest ($308). ValuePenguin says State Farm, American Family and GEICO all offer good student discounts, and that sharing a parent’s policy is usually the cheapest route.
Seniors
For 70-year-olds with clean records, NerdWallet’s lowest minimum coverage medians are American National ($21 a month), California Casualty ($24), Progressive ($30), Grange ($34) and State Farm ($39). NerdWallet suggests asking about a defensive driving course discount, which some insurers offer to older drivers.
Full coverage or minimum coverage in Colorado?
ValuePenguin recommends full coverage for most Colorado drivers. It is especially worth it if your car is worth more than $5,000 or is less than 8 years old, and your lender will likely require it if you have a loan or lease. In ValuePenguin’s data, the average full coverage policy costs $272 a month, against $84 for a minimum policy. That $188 gap buys collision coverage, comprehensive coverage for hail and theft, and much higher liability limits. A minimum policy pays only for damage and injuries you cause to others. Its $15,000 property damage limit is also low if you hit a newer vehicle.
If you choose liability-only coverage to save money, NerdWallet’s data shows how low the price can go with a smaller insurer: a $17 monthly median from American National for a 35-year-old with a clean record. Military families should compare USAA too. NerdWallet’s USAA medians in Colorado are $186 a month for full coverage and $25 for minimum coverage, and USAA was among the five cheapest options for 58 of the 70 driver profiles NerdWallet examined. Whichever level you choose, keep the MedPay and UM/UIM coverage that Colorado adds by default unless you have a clear reason to reject it.
Colorado car insurance requirements
| Coverage | Rule in Colorado |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | Required: at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident |
| Property damage liability | Required: at least $15,000 |
| Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) | Optional, but included in your policy unless you reject it in writing |
| Medical payments (MedPay) | $5,000 included unless you reject it in writing or by the same method you used to apply |
| Collision | Optional; insurers must offer deductibles of $100 or $250, and you can choose higher |
| Comprehensive | Optional; often required by lenders |

Colorado has a twist: two important coverages come with your policy unless you actively turn them down. MedPay pays reasonable medical costs for you and your passengers after a crash, regardless of fault. The DOI says it pays before your health insurance and can cover your health plan’s deductible and coinsurance. UM/UIM pays for your injuries when you are hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver, or by a driver who doesn’t carry enough insurance. The DOI’s own estimate is that 15% to 20% of Colorado drivers are uninsured, in line with the Insurance Research Council’s 19.7% figure. Rejecting UM/UIM to save a few dollars is a risky trade in this state.
Penalties: ValuePenguin says driving uninsured in Colorado is a Class 1 misdemeanor. A first offense brings a fine of at least $500, a license suspension until you get insurance and up to 4 points on your license. Reinstatement requires a $95 fee and an SR-22 certificate for three years. A second offense raises the fine to at least $1,000 and adds a four-month suspension of your license, registration and plates.

Colorado is one of the better stories of 2026. ValuePenguin says only Farmers and Sentry have raised rates so far this year, while several large insurers cut them. State Farm’s 7.8% cut is the largest, and it also makes State Farm more competitive with GEICO. If you haven’t compared quotes since 2025, now is a good time.
Car insurance discounts in Colorado
- Bundling: ValuePenguin says bundling auto with a home or renters policy typically saves “quite a bit,” and State Farm’s low Colorado home rates make it a strong bundle option.
- Telematics: Safe-driving programs that track your driving with an app or plug-in device can earn a large discount (ValuePenguin).
- Good student: State Farm, American Family and GEICO offer discounts for full-time students with a qualifying GPA or test score (ValuePenguin).
- Membership perks: NerdWallet notes that CSAA policyholders get AAA membership benefits, including ski-pass discounts. Colorado Farm Bureau members get discounts on rentals and hotels.
- Higher deductibles: Colorado insurers must offer low collision deductibles, but choosing a higher one lowers your premium.
How to save on car insurance in Colorado
- Quote GEICO, State Farm and American Family, then add one or two regional insurers such as American National, Grange or Colorado Farm Bureau. An independent agent can quote smaller companies for you. Our guide on how to compare car insurance quotes explains how to line up the coverage.
- Re-shop at renewal in 2026, because several big insurers cut rates this year.
- Keep comprehensive if you park outside. It covers hail, so drop it only on a car worth little.
- Don’t automatically reject UM/UIM or MedPay. With about one in five drivers uninsured, these protect you when the other driver can’t pay.
- Cut coverage you don’t need. ValuePenguin suggests dropping roadside assistance if your credit card or AAA membership already provides it.
