Best Car Insurance in Detroit (2026): Rates & Top Picks

By Roberto Gomes | Updated October 2026. This guide compares published 2026 rate data from NerdWallet, ValuePenguin and Insurify with official information from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), the City of Detroit, the Michigan State Police and the Insurance Research Council. Prime Capital Report does not sell insurance and is not a licensed agent. Every price below is an average or median from the source named next to it, so your own quote will be different.

The best car insurance in Detroit is the policy that gives you the protection Michigan’s no-fault system requires at a price you can manage, from a company that pays claims well. Detroit is the most expensive major city in our series, but the cheapest companies charge a fraction of the city average. In 2026, Progressive, Auto-Owners, GEICO and Chubb are the cheapest names in the studies we reviewed, and USAA is cheaper still for military families. The choices you make on your policy matter almost as much as the company. Since the 2019 reform, Michigan drivers pick their own PIP medical limit, and insurers can no longer price by ZIP code or credit score. Detroit’s crime numbers are also improving fast, with auto thefts down 23% in 2025.

Key takeaways

  • Detroit costs far more than the rest of Michigan: NerdWallet’s October 2026 median for full coverage is $6,289 a year in Detroit, compared with $2,950 for Michigan and $2,361 nationally.
  • Lowest prices in the studies: GEICO ($2,451 a year) and Chubb ($2,886) had the lowest medians in NerdWallet’s Detroit data. ValuePenguin found Progressive cheapest at $267 a month, and Insurify found Auto-Owners cheapest at $224 a month.
  • Shopping pays: ValuePenguin says switching from the most expensive major company in Detroit to the cheapest saves $336 a month on average.
  • Michigan’s rules are unique: drivers choose from six PIP medical levels, and insurers can’t use ZIP code, credit score, sex or marital status to set rates, according to DIFS.
  • Default liability is high: policies come with 250/500 bodily injury limits unless you sign a form to choose less; the lowest allowed is 50/100.
  • Theft is falling: Detroit recorded 6,391 auto thefts in 2025, down 23% from 8,331 in 2024, according to the city.

How much does car insurance cost in Detroit?

Each source uses different drivers, cars and coverage levels, so their averages don’t match. That’s why we show them side by side instead of blending them. All three agree that Detroit costs roughly double the Michigan average.

In NerdWallet’s data, the typical Detroit driver pays more than twice as much as the typical Michigan driver ($6,289 vs. $2,950). ValuePenguin says Michigan is the third-most expensive state for car insurance and Detroit is roughly one and a half times the state average in its city-level data. Insurify puts nearby Ann Arbor at $163 a month and Grand Rapids at $159, against $343 in Detroit. In ValuePenguin’s statewide table, neighboring Hamtramck has the highest rates in Michigan ($635 a month), while Dearborn ($443), Warren ($365) and Livonia ($256) are all well below Detroit’s $607.

NerdWallet: cheapest companies for a 35-year-old good driver

NerdWallet analyzed rates for male and female drivers in every Detroit ZIP code using a 2023 Toyota Camry LE. Full coverage included 100/300/50 liability, 100/300 uninsured motorist coverage, Michigan’s required no-fault coverages and $1,000 deductibles. The table shows median annual rates for a 35-year-old with good credit and a clean record.

Company Full coverage (median per year) Per month (est.)
GEICO $2,451 $204
Chubb $2,886 $241
Farmers $4,576 $381
Progressive $4,743 $395
Fremont $5,086 $424
Michigan Insurance $5,088 $424
Hastings Mutual $5,222 $435
Auto-Owners $5,471 $456
Wolverine Mutual $7,252 $604
USAA* $2,553 $213
Detroit median $6,289 $524

Source: NerdWallet (updated Oct. 2, 2026; Quadrant Information Services data). Monthly figures are our estimate (annual ÷ 12). NerdWallet also says Chubb offers the cheapest liability coverage in Detroit, averaging $1,704 a year. It excluded Liberty Mutual because its rates weren’t available. *USAA is available only to military families, veterans and some federal employees.

ValuePenguin: Detroit results

ValuePenguin’s Detroit page is built on 87,552 quotes from eight companies across 32 Detroit ZIP codes. Its sample driver is a 30-year-old man with good credit and a 2015 Honda Civic EX, with 50/100/25 liability, matching uninsured motorist limits and $500 deductibles. Progressive is cheapest at $267 a month for full coverage, about two-thirds of the citywide average. ValuePenguin warns that Progressive has a poor customer service reputation, and suggests Auto-Owners ($310) as a close second.

Company Full coverage (avg. per month) Minimum liability (avg. per month)
Progressive $267 $115
Auto-Owners $310 $118
AAA $503 $173
Farm Bureau $517 $199
Allstate $531 $165
State Farm $659 $451

Insurify: average Detroit quotes

Insurify’s figures mix real-time quotes from its users with Quadrant Information Services estimates. It found Auto-Owners and USAA cheapest in Detroit for both full coverage and liability-only policies.

Company Full coverage (avg. per month) Liability only (avg. per month)
Auto-Owners $224 $132
USAA* $226 $132
Chubb $245 $144
Progressive $310 $215
Safeco $372 $213
GEICO $454 $307
State Farm $464 $272
Allstate $525 $251
Detroit average $418 $268

Source: Insurify, Detroit (October 2026 page; rates current as of Sep. 30, 2026). *USAA is limited to military members, veterans and their families.

The three sources rank companies differently because they use different drivers, cars and company lists. GEICO, for example, is cheapest in NerdWallet’s data but mid-pack in Insurify’s. ValuePenguin’s statewide study finds Progressive cheapest in 97% of Michigan cities, including Detroit ($304 a month with a 2018 Civic). The practical lesson: get quotes from Progressive, Auto-Owners, GEICO and Chubb, plus USAA if you qualify, with identical PIP and liability choices.

Customer service and financial strength

ValuePenguin says State Farm and USAA have the highest J.D. Power satisfaction ratings among large insurers in Detroit, but State Farm is among the most expensive there. Statewide, it names Auto-Owners its pick for the best service, at a higher price than Progressive. Here are the Michigan scores it reports.

Company J.D. Power 2025 customer satisfaction score AM Best financial strength
USAA* 735 A++
State Farm 650 A++

Auto-Owners 638 A+

Best car insurance in Detroit by driver profile

Young drivers

NerdWallet found GEICO cheapest for 20-year-olds with their own policy in Detroit, at $4,738 a year, followed by Chubb ($5,807) and Hastings Mutual ($6,032). For 18-year-olds, ValuePenguin found Auto-Owners far ahead: $187 a month for liability only and $520 for full coverage, roughly half the city average. State Farm charged teens $1,219 a month for liability alone. ValuePenguin recommends sharing a parent’s policy and asking about good-student and student-away-from-home discounts.

Drivers with a speeding ticket

ValuePenguin found Progressive cheapest after a ticket at $329 a month, about two-thirds of the $514 city average, with Auto-Owners at $362. For teens with a ticket or accident, Auto-Owners charged $218 a month for minimum coverage, more than $100 below the next-cheapest company.

Drivers with an accident

After one at-fault accident, NerdWallet found Chubb cheapest at $4,067 a year, well below GEICO ($6,377) and Auto-Owners ($6,547). ValuePenguin found Auto-Owners cheapest at $362 a month, followed by Progressive ($388), against a $571 city average.

Drivers with a DUI

Progressive is the clear pick after a DUI in both studies: $6,024 a year in NerdWallet’s data (Chubb was next at $7,187) and $311 a month in ValuePenguin’s, about a quarter of the city average. Auto-Owners was a distant second at $697. ValuePenguin says a DUI roughly triples Detroit rates on average.

Drivers with poor credit

Michigan’s 2019 reform bars insurers from using your credit score to set rates, according to DIFS. That’s why you won’t find a poor-credit price table for Detroit like the ones in other states.

Mature drivers

NerdWallet’s cheapest medians for 60-year-olds in Detroit were Chubb ($2,476 a year), GEICO ($2,662) and Farmers ($2,898). Drivers on Medicare can also opt out of PIP medical coverage entirely if their household meets DIFS’s conditions, which can cut costs further.

Car insurance costs by Detroit ZIP code

Here Michigan is different. DIFS says insurers can’t use ZIP codes to set rates, but ValuePenguin notes that prices still differ by area because of other factors. In its data, the cheapest areas are the northeastern corner of the city and the area around the airport.

ZIP code Full coverage (avg. per month) vs. ValuePenguin ZIP average
48242 $598 −18%
48236 $635 −13%
48233 $651 −11%
48239 $656 −10%
48217 $678 −7%
48226 (downtown) $732 0%
48227 $767 +5%
48206 $776 +6%
48234 $776 +6%
48205 $796 +9%
48213 $806 +10%

Source: ValuePenguin, Detroit (updated Sep. 25, 2026). ValuePenguin’s ZIP-level averages are much higher than its company averages above, and it doesn’t explain the difference, so compare ZIP codes only with each other.

NerdWallet’s data for Detroit’s most populated ZIP codes points the same way: its full coverage medians run from $5,648 a year in 48209 to $7,351 in several ZIP codes, including 48205, 48210, 48227 and 48235.

Why car insurance is more expensive in Detroit

Michigan’s no-fault system

Michigan is a no-fault state. PIP pays your medical bills and lost wages after a crash no matter who caused it, ValuePenguin explains. Since the reform, you choose your PIP medical level, but the default if you choose nothing is unlimited coverage, according to DIFS. Michigan also requires property protection insurance (PPI), which ValuePenguin says reimburses others for damage your car causes to a building, fence, wall or parked car, with a $1 million limit.

Vehicle theft

Comprehensive coverage pays for theft, so local theft levels feed into your premium. The good news is that Detroit theft is falling sharply. City of Detroit preliminary figures show 6,391 auto thefts in 2025, down 23% from 8,331 in 2024. Carjackings fell 46%, from 142 to 77, and are down 84% since 2015. Insurify lists above-average car theft, heavy truck traffic and frequent winter storms as reasons Detroit premiums are high.

Traffic and crashes

The Michigan State Police 2025 county crash report shows 49,282 crashes, 159 deaths and 15,682 injuries in Wayne County in 2025. That’s about 17% of Michigan’s 290,221 crashes. Statewide, traffic deaths fell 3% in 2025 to 1,065, according to MSP.

Uninsured drivers

The Insurance Research Council estimates that 22.3% of Michigan drivers were uninsured in 2023, the fourth-highest rate in the country and well above the national 15.4%, according to the Insurance Information Institute. More than one in five drivers may have no coverage, so uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is worth a close look in Detroit.

Michigan car insurance requirements

Michigan’s 2019 auto insurance reform changed what you must buy and what you can choose. Here are the key rules from DIFS:

  • Bodily injury liability: policies come with $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident unless you choose otherwise. To go lower, you must sign a selection form, and you can’t go below $50,000/$100,000.
  • Property damage liability: $10,000, plus $1 million of property protection insurance (PPI), as ValuePenguin lists in its summary of Michigan requirements.
  • PIP medical: six levels: unlimited, up to $500,000, up to $250,000, up to $250,000 with exclusions (for people with qualifying non-Medicare health coverage), up to $50,000 (for Medicaid enrollees who meet DIFS conditions) and a full opt-out for people with Medicare Parts A and B. If you don’t choose, you get unlimited.

DIFS adds that, for policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020, insurers had to cut average statewide PIP medical premiums for eight years: by at least 45% for the $50,000 option, 35% for $250,000, 20% for $500,000 and 10% for unlimited. Rates must also be approved by the state before insurers use them.

Rating factors insurers can’t use

Under the reform, DIFS says Michigan auto insurers are prohibited from using sex, marital status, home ownership, credit score, educational level, occupation and ZIP codes to set rates. Your driving record, the car you drive, your coverage choices and other approved factors still count.

Choosing PIP wisely

A lower PIP limit can save real money, but ValuePenguin cautions that it only makes sense if you have good health insurance that covers car-crash injuries. If you choose a limited option and suffer serious injuries, costs above your limit may fall on you or your health plan. Read your health plan’s auto-accident terms before you lower PIP.

Are Detroit car insurance rates going up in 2026?

Mostly not. ValuePenguin’s Michigan filing data, current as of Oct. 6, 2026, shows State Farm (−4.9%), Progressive (−2.8%), Auto-Owners (−0.9%), The Hanover (−0.9%) and Allstate (−0.8%) lowering rates in 2026. Farmers had the biggest increase (+4.9%), followed by American Family (+2.9%), Farm Bureau (+2.6%), Liberty Mutual (+2.4%) and AAA (+1.4%). These are average filed changes, so your own renewal can move differently.

Car insurance discounts in Michigan

  • Good student and student-away-from-home: ValuePenguin suggests both for Detroit teens.
  • Family policies: sharing a policy with parents is usually cheaper than a separate policy for a teen.
  • PIP choice: not a discount, but the biggest lever you control. The mandated PIP medical reductions are largest for the lower options.
  • Bundling and multi-car: combining auto with home or renters insurance, or insuring several vehicles.
  • Anti-theft devices: NICB recommends steering wheel locks, alarms, kill switches and GPS trackers; ask your insurer whether they lower your comprehensive premium.

How to save on car insurance in Detroit

  1. Compare at least three quotes with identical choices. In Michigan that means the same PIP medical level, bodily injury limits, uninsured motorist limits and deductibles. Our guide on how to compare car insurance quotes walks through it.
  2. Start with Progressive, Auto-Owners, GEICO and Chubb. Add USAA if you’re eligible.
  3. Review your PIP level with your health coverage in hand. Lower options cost less, but only make sense if your health plan covers auto injuries.
  4. Don’t cut bodily injury liability lightly. DIFS requires a signed form to go below 250/500 because of the financial risk.
  5. Keep uninsured motorist coverage. More than one in five Michigan drivers may be uninsured.
  6. Protect your record. ValuePenguin says a DUI roughly triples Detroit rates.
  7. Re-shop every year. With most large Michigan insurers cutting or holding rates in 2026, renewal is a good time to compare.
