Best Car Insurance in Los Angeles (2026): Rates & Picks

By Roberto Gomes | Updated October 2026. This guide compares published 2026 rate studies from NerdWallet and ValuePenguin with official information from the California Department of Insurance (CDI), the California DMV, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Prime Capital Report does not sell insurance and is not a licensed agent. Every price below is an average or median from the source named next to it, so your own quote will be different.

The best car insurance in Los Angeles is a policy with strong coverage at a fair price, from a company that pays claims without a fight. In 2026, the cheapest names for a typical L.A. driver are GEICO, Mercury and the AAA insurers, with Progressive and CIG close behind for some profiles. Los Angeles costs much more than the rest of California, even though California as a whole is below the national average. The reasons are local: the nation’s highest vehicle-theft total, crowded streets and wildfire losses. Under Proposition 103, your driving record, mileage and experience matter most, so a clean record and honest mileage are your best tools alongside comparing quotes.

Key takeaways

  • L.A. costs more than the rest of California: NerdWallet’s October 2026 median for full coverage is $2,603 a year in Los Angeles, compared with $1,894 for California and $2,361 nationally.
  • Lowest prices in the studies: ValuePenguin found GEICO cheapest across L.A. County at $147 a month for full coverage. NerdWallet’s lowest median in the city was CSAA, an AAA insurer, at $1,614 a year.
  • Bad record? Mercury was cheapest after a DUI in both studies, and cheapest after an accident in ValuePenguin’s.
  • New legal minimum: 30/60/15 liability since Jan. 1, 2025, up from 15/30/5, according to CDI.
  • Good Driver Discount: California law requires Good Driver rates to be at least 20% below what you’d otherwise pay.
  • Theft is falling but still the worst in the U.S.: The Los Angeles metro had 53,911 vehicle thefts in 2025, the most of any U.S. metro area, according to NICB.

How much does car insurance cost in Los Angeles?

Each study uses a different sample driver, car and coverage level, so their averages don’t match. That’s why we show them side by side instead of blending them. The pattern is consistent, though: L.A. is well above the California average.

In NerdWallet’s data, the typical L.A. driver pays about 37% more than the typical California driver ($2,603 vs. $1,894). NerdWallet puts the average for liability-only coverage in the city at $900 a year. ValuePenguin’s figures show the same gap. Within L.A. County, drivers inside the City of Los Angeles average $234 a month for full coverage, while those in the county’s other cities and unincorporated areas average $193. In its statewide study, ValuePenguin puts L.A. at $307 a month, well above San Diego ($214), San Jose ($214) and Long Beach ($245). The single most expensive city in California in that study is Beverly Hills, at $356 a month.

NerdWallet: cheapest companies for a 35-year-old good driver

NerdWallet analyzed rates for male and female drivers in every Los Angeles ZIP code using a 2023 Toyota Camry LE. Full coverage included 100/300/50 liability, 100/300 uninsured motorist coverage and $1,000 deductibles. The table shows median annual rates for a 35-year-old with good credit and a clean record.

Company Full coverage (median per year) Per month (est.)
CSAA (AAA)* $1,614 $135
CIG $2,105 $175
GEICO $2,133 $178
Mercury $2,248 $187
Progressive $2,352 $196
Grange Insurance Association $2,406 $201
Auto Club of SoCal (AAA)* $2,417 $201
Toggle $2,510 $209
Kemper $2,707 $226
USAA** $1,623 $135
Los Angeles median $2,603 $217

ValuePenguin notes that you can’t choose which AAA club insures you, so ask AAA which one quotes your address. NerdWallet excluded Liberty Mutual because its rates weren’t available. **USAA is available only to military families, veterans and some federal employees.

ValuePenguin: Los Angeles County results

ValuePenguin’s L.A. page is built on 12,096 quotes from eight companies across 306 L.A. County ZIP codes. Its sample driver is a 30-year-old man with good credit and a 2015 Honda Civic EX, with 50/100/25 liability, $10,000 of medical payments, matching uninsured motorist limits and $500 deductibles. Here, GEICO wins for most drivers: $147 a month for full coverage, 26% below the county average, and $54 a month for minimum coverage.

Company Full coverage (avg. per month) Minimum liability (avg. per month)
GEICO $147 $54
Mercury $171 $75
Progressive $174 $65
AAA $190 $72
Allstate $220 $89
State Farm $220 $79
Farmers $321 $104
USAA* $145 $60
L.A. County average $199 $75

Source: ValuePenguin, Los Angeles (updated Oct. 8, 2026). *USAA is only available to current and former military members and their families. ValuePenguin adds that Fred Loya Insurance also offers cheap rates but has a poor reputation for customer service.

The two studies disagree on the winner because they use different cars, coverage levels and company lists. ValuePenguin’s statewide study, which uses a newer 2018 Civic, actually finds AAA cheapest in the City of Los Angeles at $192 a month, while GEICO is cheapest in 90% of California cities. The practical lesson: get quotes from GEICO, Mercury and AAA, plus Progressive or CIG, and let your own numbers decide.

Customer service and financial strength

Price is only half of “best.” ValuePenguin says AAA and GEICO offer the best overall mix of reliable service, useful coverage and affordable rates in California. It also points out a GEICO drawback: fewer add-ons, such as no new car replacement coverage. Here are the scores it reports.

Company J.D. Power 2025 customer satisfaction score AM Best financial strength
USAA* 735 A++
AAA (SoCal and NorCal) 652 NR
State Farm 650 A++
GEICO 645 A++
Farmers 622 A

Best car insurance in Los Angeles by driver profile

Young drivers

Age has a huge effect in L.A. NerdWallet’s citywide median is $4,863 a year at age 20, compared with $2,603 at 35. For 20-year-olds with their own policy, CSAA was cheapest at $3,072, followed by CIG ($3,374) and GEICO ($3,699). For 18-year-olds, ValuePenguin found State Farm cheapest: $152 a month for minimum coverage and $383 for full coverage, with GEICO only a few dollars more ($168 and $387). ValuePenguin says L.A. teens pay more than twice as much for minimum coverage as a 30-year-old and that staying on a parent’s policy is usually cheaper than buying a separate one.

Drivers with a speeding ticket

California prices tickets heavily, because the driving record is the first rating factor under state law. ValuePenguin says one ticket raises L.A. rates by 46% on average. GEICO was cheapest after a ticket at $231 a month.

Drivers with an accident

ValuePenguin says an accident roughly doubles the cost of car insurance in L.A. Mercury was cheapest after one at-fault accident at $274 a month, followed by Progressive ($289) and AAA ($329), against a county average of $393. NerdWallet found CSAA ($2,041 a year), CIG ($2,724) and Grange ($3,373) cheapest.

Drivers with a DUI

Mercury is the clear pick after a DUI. NerdWallet found it cheapest at $3,983 a year, ahead of Grange ($4,218) and CIG ($4,220). ValuePenguin also ranks Mercury first at $304 a month, about half the county average, then GEICO ($375). ValuePenguin says L.A. rates nearly triple after a DUI on average, though Mercury and Farmers raised rates only about 80%.

Mature drivers

Rates fall steadily with age. NerdWallet’s citywide median is $2,372 a year at 60, the lowest of any age group it tracks. The cheapest 60-year-old medians were CSAA ($1,452), Toggle ($1,870) and CIG ($1,903).

Insurers price by location because density, crime and crash rates differ across the city. ValuePenguin found Valley Glen and Van Nuys the most expensive areas in L.A. County at $271 a month for full coverage, and Avalon on Catalina Island the cheapest at $150. The table shows a selection of City of Los Angeles neighborhoods from its data.

Neighborhood Full coverage (avg. per month) vs. city average ($234)
El Sereno $202 −14%
Monterey Hills $202 −14%
Mission Hills $204 −13%
Glassell Park $208 −11%

NerdWallet’s data for L.A.’s most populated ZIP codes shows a similar spread. Its full coverage medians run from $2,266 a year in 90042 to $2,858 in 90006, with 90011, the city’s most populated ZIP code in its table, at $2,527.

Why car insurance is more expensive in Los Angeles

Vehicle theft

Comprehensive coverage pays for theft, so local theft levels feed directly into your premium. The National Insurance Crime Bureau says the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area had 53,911 vehicle thefts in 2025, nearly double the second-place New York metro. California had 136,988 thefts, more than 20% of the national total. The trend is improving, though. The Mayor’s Office reported that LAPD recorded 1,963 fewer motor vehicle thefts in 2024 than in 2023 (26,827). LAPD’s CompStat snapshot for the week ending Dec. 6, 2025, shows another 5,081 fewer thefts year to date than in 2024. Nationally, NICB lists the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata as the most stolen models of 2025.

Traffic and crashes

Dense traffic means more collisions and injury claims. LADOT reports 304 traffic deaths in the City of Los Angeles in 2024. That was the first decline in several years, but the department calls the toll “unacceptable.”

Wildfires

Fire is now a real part of L.A. car insurance. LADOT says the Palisades and Eaton fires of January 2025, driven by winds that gusted to 100 mph, destroyed more than 16,000 structures and caused at least 31 direct deaths. Comprehensive coverage is what pays for a car damaged or destroyed by fire, falling objects or other natural disasters, as ValuePenguin explains. A liability-only policy won’t.

Uninsured drivers

The Insurance Research Council estimates that 20.4% of California drivers were uninsured in 2023, the eighth-highest rate in the country, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The national rate was 15.4%. Roughly one in five drivers you share the road with may have no coverage, so uninsured motorist coverage is worth keeping.

California car insurance requirements

CDI says that since Jan. 1, 2025, as policies renew, every standard California auto policy must carry at least 30/60/15 liability coverage:

  • Bodily injury liability: $30,000 per person (up from $15,000) and $60,000 per accident (up from $30,000).
  • Property damage liability: $15,000 per accident (up from $5,000).

The California DMV adds that comprehensive or collision coverage alone doesn’t meet the financial responsibility requirement; you need liability. For income-eligible drivers, CDI points to the California Low Cost Auto (CLCA) Insurance Program, whose lower limits did not change.

Even the new minimum is thin for Los Angeles. A $15,000 property damage limit won’t replace most newer cars, and in a city where one in five drivers may be uninsured, uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage protects you. If you own a home or have savings, consider at least 100/300/100 liability with matching uninsured motorist limits. If you finance or lease, your lender will usually require collision and comprehensive.

How Proposition 103 affects your rate

California Insurance Code Section 1861.02, added by Proposition 103, says auto rates must be set using these factors in decreasing order of importance: your driving safety record, the miles you drive each year and your years of driving experience. Other factors need the commissioner’s approval. The same law says a lack of prior insurance can’t, by itself, be used to set your eligibility or price. CDI also banned gender as a rating factor in 2020.

The most valuable rule for L.A. drivers is the Good Driver Discount. Under CDI’s guide, a Good Driver has been licensed for at least three consecutive years and has no more than one point on their record. Every insurer must offer Good Driver coverage, and the rate must be at least 20% lower than a non-Good Driver would pay at the same company.

Are Los Angeles car insurance rates going up in 2026?

Mostly flat after big increases. ValuePenguin reviewed California rate filings current as of Oct. 5, 2026. State Farm was the only major company with a 2026 decrease (−6.2%), while Kemper had the largest increase (+10.5%). Most others, including GEICO, Progressive, Mercury and Farmers, show no 2026 change. Over five years, though, filed increases run from 23.6% (Liberty Mutual) to 62.1% (Kemper), with State Farm still up 42.8% despite its cut. These are average filed changes, so your own renewal can move differently.

Car insurance discounts in California

  • Good Driver Discount: at least 20% off for qualified drivers, required by state law.
  • Low mileage: annual mileage is the second most important rating factor in California, so report it accurately, especially if you work from home.
  • Defensive driving courses: ValuePenguin notes these may qualify you for a discount after a ticket.
  • Good student and safety-feature discounts: common for teen drivers, according to ValuePenguin.
  • Multi-car and bundling: adding cars or a renters or home policy usually lowers the total.
  • Accident forgiveness: ValuePenguin suggests asking about it before you have an accident.

How to save on car insurance in Los Angeles

  1. Compare at least three quotes with identical coverage. Match liability, uninsured motorist and medical payments limits and deductibles before comparing prices. Our guide on how to compare car insurance quotes has a checklist.
  2. Start with the companies that price well in L.A. In the studies above, that means GEICO, Mercury, AAA, Progressive and CIG, plus USAA if you’re eligible.
  3. Protect your Good Driver status. Under CDI’s definition, more than one point on your record costs you the 20% Good Driver discount.
  4. Keep comprehensive if you can’t replace your car. Theft and wildfire risk make it worth more in L.A. than in most cities. Raise the deductible instead of dropping it.
  5. Use anti-theft tools. NICB recommends steering wheel locks, alarms, kill switches and GPS trackers.
  6. Re-shop every year. Moving neighborhoods, adding a driver or cleaning up your record can change which company is cheapest.
